Woking’s winless league run continued last night at Grimsby, as an early goal from Jon-Paul Pittman was cancelled out by Giuseppe Sole’s header but then a first-half brace from Padraig Amond was enough to see off the Cards.

Garry Hill made eight changes to the team that lost 2-1 at Bromley, with focus clearly on Saturday’s FA Trophy quarter final. New signing Joe Robinson, Ipswich Town’s U21 captain, made his debut at centre-back.

This was Woking’s first of two visits to Grimsby this week, with the Trophy tie to come on the weekend.

It was the worst possible start for the Cards as in the fourth minute Pittman was on hand to turn the ball home.

However, Hill’s side had the majority of the play following the goal and equalised after the half-hour through Sole’s excellent header.

The scores weren’t level for long though. Amond restored Grimsby’s lead with a header of his own three minutes later.

The Irishman soon got his 24th goal of the season and his second on the night with a well-taken finish before half-time.

Godfrey Poku was the standout player in the much-changed Woking team but his influence wasn’t enough to rescue a point in the second-half.

The result means it was the Cards sixth league game without a win and their third defeat in a row. Woking remain in 11th place, but are now six points off fifth placed Gateshead in the play-offs.
